a5c7b9f00b It's 1899 and 'The Fantom' is trying to start a World War. The job of preventing this from occurring is given to Allan Quatermain. During the briefing with 'M', Quatermain discovers that he will be working alongside a host of various characters, from the Invisible Man and Captain Nemo to Dorian Gray and Dr. Henry Jekyll). Together, they are the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. In this adventure, the Fantom is trying to start a World War, and be at the head of it. The Fantom has highly superior weapons to the normal weapons of that day, and he also has extreme cunning,we see by his tricking the countries into suspecting each other for war-mongering. A supposed loyalist to her Majesty's Empire is sent to fetch Allan Quatermain in an effort to track down the group who is trying to start the war. In a private and secret meeting, Quatermain meets who he is to be teaming up with on this mission. He is accompanied by Captain Nemo, Mina Harker, Rodney Skinner, Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, and Dr. Henry Jekyll (also Mr. Edward Hyde). Soon into their adventure they discover that the Fantom is behind these attacks, but there is more to this war than battle and cunning. If I may be bold: A note to movie directors and producers:

If you insist on making movies in the dark, you might try slowing the action down a little bit so one can actually see it and enjoy it. One only knew that something happened AFTER the fact. In my entire movie watching career I've never seen such close editing. It was worse than watching an MTV music video.

Suggestion #2: Start an ALLAN QUARTERMAIN franchise with "you know who." Our friend from Wales wold be perfect. He's already played him once, right?

OK-the cool things about the movie:

1) Sean Connery. Strange material-but the man can certainly act.

2) The Nautilus. Awesome ship, with all the amenities. However, its incredible to think that somethingbiga battleship can submerge and navigate in a river or in the canals of Venice, but what the hey, its the movies!

3) Those cool libraries. I love books, so that was cool.

4) Most of the special effects. However, I don't think that Mr Hyde was 10 feet tall and weighed 1000 lbs. Can't we be a little realistic regardless of how the comic book characters looked?

4 out of 10 stars. Spoilers Ahead

I have to admit - I'm a fan of Alan Moore's, but I've managed to miss reading the books for one reason or another. I'm also sure that the books are better in their storytelling and plot than the movie is. That said, I think this is a fairly good popcorn movie - strong action scenes, some good jokes, etc. Having been an English major in college and having read my fair share of Victorian works, I would say that the movie does a wonderful job inhabiting the non-fictional world with fictional characters.

The possible sequel threads that can be pull from this are remarkable. After all, if Nemo is alive, it is possible to see his island base from Verne's "Mysterious Island," Fogg was mentioned circling the world in 80 days, there can be trips attempted to the moon, the Victorian utopias that were created at the time could be visited…etc. And, let us not forget, that if Moriarty was the bad guy in this, are Sherlock or Mycroft Holmes (now that's a character to do a study of drug addiction with) too far behind?

Norrington,a directors, was better with "Blade" than he was here. I think he was given a better script for that movie, however. I also suspect he really didn't put his heart into it at places (except in Africa - he did some very nice shooting there). Again, all of that being said, he surprised me with what he managed to do with the movie (justhe did with "Blade") and exceed my expectations.

I think a solid 8.0 out of 10 is well-deserved here. Hopefully any sequels will fulfill the promise that isn't completely fulfilled here…go and see it with a friend and eat some popcorn. This is a good summer action flick - but don't expect high art. The murkiest-looking movie since Ben Affleck's “Daredevil” and aboutlacking in charm. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a comic book series written by British writer Alan Moore, illustrated by Kevin O'Neill, and launched in 1999part of the America's Best Comics imprint of Wildstorm Comics. From the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain although, in that novel, he is only a young boy No. Skinner mentions that he stole the formula from a scientist, most likely referring to the original Invisible Man. The reason for the change is because another company owned the rights to that character, whose original name is Hawley Griffin. No. Dorian Gray is killed by Mina Harker. Quatermain is stabbed in the back by Professor Moritarity. However, the movie ends with a witch doctor casting a spell over Quatermain's grave.No. In May 2015 it was announced the film is to get a reboot.Yes.
